This midweek, there was a full slate of games in both League One and League Two. 11/12 of the League Two fixtures were played on Tuesday night, with the exception being Spurs loanee George Abbott’s Notts County at home to MK Dons, with the game being shown on Sky Sports red button for those in the UK.
You know the next part by now. Abbott was named in the starting XI, for his 33rd start in League Two this season, 35th total League Two game, and 35th start in all competitions for the Magpies. Notts were looking to build on a huge win against Newport County last time out.
In the first half, Notts had over 60% of the ball, and six shots to one – though most of those attempts were half chances, as they went into the break frustrated with the score still 0-0.
However, two minutes after the break, Abbott found striker David McGoldrick in space. From there, the veteran controlled the ball, found some space – and curled a beautiful shot into the top corner, to give Notts the lead, meaning Abbott registered an assist.
Then, seven minutes later, former Spurs academy player Nick Tsaroulla doubled the lead for Notts, as he scored from close range. Then, after 74 minutes, Stuart Maynard’s side added a third goal to put the points beyond any slight doubt.
Despite five substitutes being made late on, the Spurs loanee played the 90 minutes in this one – going above the 3,000 mark in the league this season, having now played 3010 minutes. Really good stuff, it has been some season for his development.
This win leaves Notts in fourth place in League Two – one place outside the automatic promotion spots – with 68 points from their 40 games so far. They are just two points behind both second placed Bradford, and third placed Port Vale. They are even just four points behind league leaders Walsall.
Meanwhile, they now have a seven point buffer in the play offs, as well as boasting a superior goal difference, meaning that in a worst case scenario they should have a play off campaign to fall back on at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see if Abbott goes back on loan to Notts if they get promoted. Some are hoping he will get a move to the Championship.
