The striker reportedly opted for a move to Bramall Lane over the Stadium of Light.

Not only have Sunderland been tussling with Sheffield United on the pitch, but the Championship duo have been going toe-to-toe in the transfer market too.

Both clubs were reportedly in for Ben Brereton Diaz after he was deemed disposable by Southampton, with the Blades sealing a loan deal for the Chilean international.

While there is no doubting Brereton Diaz's Championship pedigree, Regis Le Bris should feel confident in the quality options he has in attack.

The Black Cats have been pursuing forward options in the transfer market and earmarked Brereton Diaz as a potential signing, but the 25-year-old opted for a return to Bramall Lane.

While some believe the move will catapult Chris Wilder's side to the Championship title, Le Bris can feel assured that he possesses a potent attack.

Sunderland have been purring in recent weeks, winning six of their last 10 and should have more points on the board after Wilson Isidor's penalty woes against Burnley.

Eliezer Mayenda has proven his worth during the last couple of games and looks a handful for defenders, while Isidor is always capable of something special.

On the wings, Patrick Roberts and Enzo Le Fee are direct options, with the Frenchman looking an absolute steal. Although only two games into his Sunderland career, he looks a step-up on the second tier of English football.

With Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson still to return from injury, Le Bris is armed with a dangerous arsenal and when they are all fit, he will be the envy of his opposition.

If Brereton Diaz had chosen a move to Wearside, then it would have been a shrewd signing for the Black Cats, but the club's success does not hinge on his presence.

Brereton Diaz's switch to Southampton has been a failure and, after struggling at Villarreal, the forward must prove his worth for Sheffield United.

The Chilean made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Saints without scoring a goal and lacked a cutting edge in his pantomime performance against Newcastle United.

His doubters may be saying he cannot perform on the grandest stage, but in the Championship, he has shown he is a different animal.

It feels like only yesterday that the 25-year-old was tearing it up at Blackburn Rovers, with Brereton Diaz scoring an impressive 36 Championship goals over two seasons.

In moving to South Yorkshire, the Chilean is returning to a club he knows well, and therefore he will have no issues settling in to a familiar environment.

During his previous loan stint with the Blades, the forward notched six goals and an assist in Sheffield United's blunt effort in the Premier League.

Brereton Diaz provided a spark in what was a forgettable 2023/24 campaign and supporters will feel confident he can have the same impact this season.

The Championship title race is starting to sizzle, with the finest of margins separating Sheffield United, Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland.

Transfers are sure to play a pivotal role and while Brereton Diaz's move to South Yorkshire could be instrumental, Sunderland should feel blessed with their attacking options.
