15th-placed Tottenham Hotspur traveled to Molineux this afternoon to clash heads with Wolves. Under-fire Ange Postecoglou did not risk Son Heung-min and Wilson Odobert ahead of their decisive Europa League quarter-final contest against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night, but the absence of the attacking duo cost them miserably. Moreover, their appalling defending and non-existent midfield further ruined their revival hopes in a dismal 4-2 defeat.

Below are the Tottenham Hotspur players rated in their defeat against Wolves.

Made initial saves on both occasions in the first half, but he could have done little to stop Rayan Ait-Nouri’s stupendous strike or Djed Spence’s shocking own goal.

Archie Gray: 5.5

The versatile teenager featured as a right fullback. Did not offer much with his overlapping runs as Ait-Nouri posed a constant threat down the wide.

Cristian Romero: 6

Dominated the aerial duels, made some crucial clearances and interceptions. Tried to play it out from the back to instigate swift attacking transitions. However, his misjudgement allowed Wolves to restore their two-goal lead soon after Tel’s strike. Contributed to Richarlison’s goal moments before Matheus Cunha’s strike.

Ben Davies: 6

Impressed with his passing game, but the Welshman struggled against Wolves’ swift counter-attacking football. Jorgen Strand Larsen caused persistent problems with his aerial and physical supremacy in and around the box.

Djed Spence: 5.5

Switched off momentarily while conceding an own goal at the back end of the first half. Was a bit more adventurous with his dribbles, marauding runs and crosses from the left-hand flank.

Pape Matar Sarr: 5

His needless challenge resulted in a Wolves free-kick, which led to the early opener. Often left space for the home side, who dominated the pockets and half spaces in the centre of the pitch. The gaffer decided to take him off for Lucas Bergvall ten minutes into the second half.

Yves Bissouma: 6

Forced Jose Sa to make an impressive save from his long-range strike. His passes were accurate but lacked progression. Was taken off for Rodrigo Bentancur early into the second half.

James Maddison: 6

Offered his creative spark in and around the attacking third. His lack of involvement in the build-ups let the Lilywhites down once again. Postecoglou took him off late in the game and brought in Dejan Kulusevski in search of a late comeback.

Brennan Johnson: 7

Was lively down the right-hand flank, as the young Wales international eventually made an impact by setting it up for Tel around the hour mark. Covered a lot of ground to help Gray contain relentless Ait-Nouri.

Mathys Tel: 7.5

The Bayern Munich loanee brought Spurs back into the game when his effort struck Nelson Semedo before finding the back of the net. He was not always successful with his dribbles, but his energy and intent added some flair and positivity in an otherwise disastrous afternoon.

Dominic Solanke: 5

Was anonymous upfront as the Englishman kept on losing duels all game, failed to test Sa in Wolves’ goal, and put little effort in contributing to the attacking build-ups. Made way for Richarlison with 15 minutes remaining.

Rodrigo Bentancur: 6.5

Added balance and compactness in the centre of the pitch with his passing and technical traits.

Lucas Bergvall: 6.5

Played his part in both goals, but his mistake led to Cunha’s late strike, thus bringing an end to their comeback hopes.

Richarlison: 7

Bundled it in to make it 3-2 momentarily.
