The U.S. Men’s National Team and the USWNT shared Inter Miami’s Florida Blue Training Center in Fort Lauderdale with the Herons earlier this month. During a media session, men’s coach Mauricio Pochettino said Heron star Lionel Messi’s sons one day could follow their father’s footsteps to the World Cup.
But, according to an Inter Miami News article, the Argentine coach said he’d rather see Thiago, 12, and Mateo, 9, represent La Albiceleste.
A reporter asked Pochettino whether the boys might represent the U.S. in the future.
Pochettino said he probably wouldn’t still be with the USMNT when Thiago and Mateo are ready, but “it would be good, why not?”
“Considering that they are Leo’s children and thinking about the Argentine blood they have, it would be difficult to convince them,” he continued. ”I’m Argentine too, I would like them to play for Argentina more than the United States unless I’m in the United States at that time.”
Lionel Messi and his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo, have three sons; Ciro, the youngest, is 9.
Pochettino is in the early stages of preparing his squad for next year’s World Cup — they won friendlies against Venezuela (3-1) and Costa Rica (3-0) last week.
