A Missed Opportunity for Toronto FC

Toronto FC was reportedly interested in reuniting with Eriq Zavaleta, a player who had a significant impact during his time with the club. Zavaleta, a Salvadoran international, played seven seasons with Toronto FC between 2015 and 2021, featuring in 152 matches. During that period, he was part of the squad’s golden era, contributing to their MLS Cup victory and other domestic successes.

The reunion seemed plausible given Zavaleta’s connection with former Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney, now managing LA Galaxy. However, Toronto’s hopes of bringing the defender back were dashed as Zavaleta signed a contract extension with LA Galaxy, keeping him with the club until 2025.

Zavaleta’s Current Role with LA Galaxy

Since joining LA Galaxy in 2022, Zavaleta’s role has been limited. In the 2023 season, he featured in only seven matches, scoring once in 200 minutes of play. Despite his limited impact, the Galaxy have shown faith in the veteran defender by securing his services for two more years.

The decision means Zavaleta will not return to Toronto FC, where he once thrived as a key defensive figure. Instead, the 30-year-old will aim to prove his worth with LA Galaxy, hoping to make a more significant impact in the upcoming MLS seasons.
