Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a recent resurgence following an egregious period that saw the club fall to as low as 15th on the Premier League table.
Tottenham struggled because of their plethora of injury problems. At one point, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou had as many as 14 players injured, and unsurprisingly, it affected results.
One of the key misses during that dire run for Spurs was big-money summer signing Dominic Solanke. The £65 million striker has been missing since the north London derby loss at Arsenal in January due to a knee issue that was to keep him out for around six weeks.
However, Solanke was pictured training on grass in a post from the Tottenham social media team. He is back ahead of schedule.
Per the Tottenham head coach, Solanke should be fit for the Europa League last-16 decider against AZ Alkmaar next Thursday. He has an outside chance of featuring in the game.
Asked when Solanke, Micky Van de Ven, and Cristian Romero could be fit, Postecoglou said (via the Evening Standard): “The first European game I would say outside chance for any three of them, but certainly they will be back training fully by then, and then we have got Bournemouth on the weekend, and I reckon much better odds for that.
“And definitely, by the second European game, they should all be available to play.
“Dom is the only one where we have got to be careful because he is ahead of schedule, so I do not want to push that, in case we need to pull the reins in a bit, but with Romero and Van de Ven, that is the plan at this stage.
While Solanke returning early is positive news for Spurs, his injury record should be a cause for concern. The former Bournemouth striker has missed crucial stretches of the season.
Relying on him as the sole No. 9 option is a risk Tottenham cannot afford, especially if the club wants to compete on multiple fronts.
Tottenham forward Richarlison has failed to cement his place as a reliable option up front since his £60 million arrival from Everton. He has had quality moments, but his overall goal return and performances have not justified his price tag.
If Spurs are serious about long-term success, selling Richarlison and reinvesting in a young, dynamic forward should be a priority.
A wise, long-term solution for Tottenham would be Liam Delap. The Manchester City academy product is at Ipswich Town, where he has shown he has the physicality, finishing ability, and work rate needed for the Premier League.
If Ipswich fail to secure survival, Delap could become a realistic and affordable target for Spurs. He has the potential to develop under Postecoglou while providing much-needed depth behind Solanke.
