Archie Gray and Mikey Moore again struggled

Tottenham slumped to a 21st Premier League defeat of the season as Aston Villa boosted their hopes of a Champions League place with a 2-0 win over Ange Postecoglou’s side.

With Spurs’ focus firmly on Wednesday’s Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao, Ange Postecoglou named a second-string XI at Villa Park, with the exception of captain Heung-min Son.

Spurs were competitive in the first half, with Son and Wilson Odobert going close, but Villa made the breakthrough on the hour when Ezri Konsa finished from Ollie Watkins’ header.

Boubacar Kamara made it 2-0 with a fierce finish but Spurs’ season rests on Wednesday’s result.

Here’s how we rated the Spurs players at Villa...

Antonin Kinsky 7

Assured, despite being beaten twice. Make a fingertip save to deny Watkins and composed at coming for crosses.

Djed Spence 6

Improved on his difficult outing against Crystal Palace last weekend but has lost his mojo in the past month.

Kevin Danso 7

Made a couple of excellent blocks to keep Villa at bay.

Ben Davies 7

Released Son with an excellent pass early on and defended stoutly in the face of Villa pressure.

Sergio Reguilon 6

Kept it simple on his first appearance since January, and did well considering this was only his second start of the season.

Pape Matar Sarr 6

Hooked early in the second half after a so-so performance and walked down the tunnel flanked by a member of Spurs’ medical staff, which will raise alarm bells ahead of Wednesday.

Archie Gray 5

Struggled to impose himself on the game and could not get in the way of Kamara’s fierce finish to make it 2-0.

Heung-min Son 6

Went close in the first half and caught the eye with a couple of trademark bursts down the left flank.

Mikey Moore 5

Did not make in the game and looks reluctant to take risks at this level.

Wilson Odobert 6

Forced Martinez into a save with a brilliant first-time flick but squandered a couple more good positions.

Mathys Tel 6

Produced some clever touches and runs, but end product was missing, aside from a good cross for Odobert’s chance.

Subs

Yves Bissouma (Sarr 51’) 4

Arguably at fault for both Villa goals after reacting slowly to Konsa’s close-range finish and failing to close down Kamara.

Rodrigo Bentancur (Reguilon 74’) 6

Got some minutes in his legs ahead of the Final.

Dominic Solanke (Son 74’) 6

Avoided injury, which was really all that matters.

Richarlison (Odobert 86’) 5

Played out the final few minutes.

Brennan Johnson (Moore 86’) 5

See above.

Not used: Vicario, Porro, Cassanova, Olusesi.
