Wembley Stadium is a surprise contender to host the potential La Liga title showdown between Barcelona and Real Madrid on May 11, according to the Daily Mail.

Barcelona are struggling to secure a venue for the second La Liga El Clasico of the season. Their historic Camp Nou remains under renovation, with delays to the €1.5 billion rebuilding project making the venue unavailable.

Their temporary home at the Olympic Stadium is also not feasible. Their contract with the stadium authorities expires at the end of April, and the venue has been pre-booked for a Rolling Stones concert.

Barcelona’s board is meeting to explore alternatives, and one of them is playing this high-stakes fixture abroad.

Wembley has emerged as a potential venue. It was the site of Barcelona’s first European Cup triumph in 1992.

La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) are reportedly open to holding the game in England, marking a historic first for Spanish domestic football.

While FIFA regulations typically require league matches to be played within the territory of the respective member association, the Spanish league wants to globalise its brand and has been looking for ways to stage matches abroad.

Barcelona beat Madrid 5-2 in the Super Cup final two weeks ago in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at the King Abdullah Stadium, and their next meeting might be in England.

However, there are logistical and regulatory hurdles. The match could have significant implications for the La Liga title race, and Madrid might be unwilling to make things easy for Barca.

Los Blancos currently lead Barca on the table by seven points with 17 games left to play.

Barcelona may also need to identify venues in the Champions League. They could go far in the tournament, meaning they must organise new locations.

The final decision is expected following another meeting on Tuesday, as the club weighs prestige, logistics and fan accessibility in their search for a suitable venue.
