Graham Potter has been unveiled as the new head coach of West Ham United after putting pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Potter inherits a squad that has struggled for results under predecessor Julen Lopetegui. Despite investing around £132.5m on new players in the summer, West Ham are mired in 14th position. With hopes of Europe fading fast, Potter has a big task to turn around the club’s season.
Fortunately, a January arrival means reinforcements could soon arrive. We’ve looked at five potential transfer targets for Graham Potter and West Ham this month.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been informed that he is free to leave Chelsea this month, having struggled for status since his £30m arrival from Leicester. Dewsbury-Hall has featured for just 56 minutes in the Premier League this season and West Ham have been heavily linked with a move.
Last season, the 26-year-old starred during Leicester’s promotion campaign as he scored 12 goals and created 14 more for the Championship winners. Full of creativity and drive, he could be available on an initial loan to inject some much-needed energy into a lifeless midfield.
West Ham still have two domestic loans available for the current campaign.
Graham Potter was Brighton boss when Evan Ferguson snubbed several leading clubs to sign for the Seagulls in 2021. After an initial exciting emergence, Ferguson’s progress has stalled. He has struggled to reclaim his place in the side since returning from the injury that curtailed his 2023/24 campaign.
Ferguson has started just twice in the Premier League this season and has been linked with an exit in search of regular minutes. Given the absences of Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen through injury, a move for Ferguson makes plenty of sense for all parties.
Another name on Chelsea’s unwanted list, Ben Chilwell was told in the summer that he had no future at Stamford Bridge. The left-back failed to find a move in the summer but after six months on the sidelines looks set to move on this month. Finding a suitor for Chilwell has been troublesome for Chelsea, given the 28-year-old’s problematic injury record and high wages.
However, an initial loan move could prove to be smart business for West Ham. Chilwell, after just 70 league appearances in four-and-a-half seasons at Chelsea, will be keen to find the form that once made him a regular in the England squad.
Sunderland might be a world away from the glitz and glamour of elder brother Jude and Real Madrid, but Jobe Bellingham is quietly building his own reputation.
The 19-year-old has excelled as part of Régis Le Bris’ promotion-chasing side, with the Premier League’s elite all monitoring his progress in the North East. Bellingham has shown himself to be a brilliantly rounded midfielder, shining in several roles.
He has four goals and three assists in the Championship this season and has performed with a maturity beyond his years.
Arsenal and Manchester United have been linked of late, though the Bellinghams have shown a willingness to take the right stepping stones on their route to the top. West Ham, a side badly in need of a midfield makeover, could be the ideal rung on the ladder.
Randal Kolo Muani seems certain to leave Paris Saint-Germain this month with Luis Enrique having deemed the striker surplus to requirements. Manchester United and Spurs are in the hunt to sign the forward on loan, though the Frenchman is likely to demand a regular role after finding himself on the fringes in Paris.
West Ham could explore that avenue as the Irons target a more mobile option to lead the line. Kolo Muani’s game is built on exploiting space in behind defenders and the pace of the Premier League could suit the 26-year-old.
Signed for €95m just 18 months ago, this is a player of real talent, available, and seeking a new environment.
