As a Manchester United fan, witnessing Liverpool clinch their 20th league title is a bitter pill to swallow.

This achievement not only equals our own record but, when combined with their superior European success, six Champions League trophies to our three, positions them as arguably the most successful English club.

Gary Neville, a United legend, acknowledged this shift, describing it as a “sobering day” for the club.

He emphasised that Liverpool’s recent triumph should serve as a wake-up call for United, urging the club to feel the urgency of resurgence.

Neville, a true United legend who has never hidden his disdain for Liverpool’s rise, refused an invitation to join the Sky Sports punditry team to cover Liverpool’s title celebrations after their clash with Tottenham Hotspur, according to The Express.

While he was on co-commentary duties during the match itself, he only appeared for the pre-game build-up alongside David Jones, Jamie Redknapp, and Daniel Sturridge, keeping his distance when the inevitable celebrations kicked off.

Sky Sports’ co-commentators return pitch-side after the final whistle to discuss the match but Neville had made his stance very clear during the broadcast.

David Jones asked whether he would stay and join the post-match panel if Liverpool sealed the title, Neville declined, essentially confirming he wouldn’t stick around to witness the celebrations firsthand.

He said: “No. There is no point in me coming down here again. I think the Liverpool fans probably won’t let me get out of the commentary box!”

And who could blame him? Seeing Liverpool equal United’s record, in United’s worst season in Premier League history no less, would’ve been salt in the wound.

Neville’s absence was more than just professionalism, it was a silent, powerful message: this hurts.
