Jose Mourinho has told Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim to join Manchester United after the Red Devils approached the 39-year-old to replace Erik ten Hag, according to the Sun.
The Portuguese duo are close after Amorim underwent an internship at Mourinho’s High Performance Football Coaching course back in 2018 at Old Trafford and Carrington, and the Sporting manager turned to the former Man United boss after the Red Devils approached him.
The Special One has encouraged his younger compatriot to take up the offer, and he has agreed to a two-and-a-half year contract with the Old Trafford club.
Man United also have the option to extend the deal by another year, but they will need to pay Sporting an additional £4.1 million for Amorim to bring his backroom staff with him despite already agreeing to pay his £8.5m release clause.
He wants to delay his move to Man United until after Sporting have played Manchester City at home in the Champions League next Tuesday, while the club also want to hold him to a 30-day notice period before allowing him to leave.
Assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge of the Carabao Cup round of 16 game against Leicester City tonight and is also likely to be in the dugout when they host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
Amorim will hope to hit the ground running at the Old Trafford club, and helping them win their first Premier League title since 2013 will be his utmost priority.
Man United are currently 14th in the league table after three wins, two draws and four defeats in nine games, and finishing in the top-four will be a huge achievement for their next permanent manager.
