Ruben Amorim has been named as Manchester United’s new first team coach, with the Portuguese tactician facing the task of restoring the Red Devils to former heights.

A dismal start to the season under Erik ten Hag has prompted change at Old Trafford and the decision to name Amorim as his successor was swiftly made.

The 39-year-old will arrive from Sporting Lisbon during November’s international break, where he has cultivated a winning culture in the Portuguese capital. After an exciting emergence at Braga, he moved to Sporting in March 2020 and has overseen several successes Estádio José Alvalade.

With excellent recruitment and flexible tactics, Amorim led Sporting to a drought-breaking Primeira Liga title in 2020/21 and added a second Portuguese championship last season. He’s also added three domestic cups in Portuguese football, emerging as a serial winner despite his relative inexperience in senior management.

Amorim’s performances saw him emerge as one of the most coveted coaches on the continent and he was linked with vacancies at Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the summer. He also held talks with West Ham United about replacing David Moyes.

Now, he becomes the youngest Manchester United manager since 1969. The former Portugal international will attempt to lead Manchester United up from a low ebb, following the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign. United are 14th in the table after nine games.

It’s approaching 12 years since the club’s last Premier League title and the Red Devils currently appear further away than ever from a 21st top-flight crown.
