Besnik Hasi became the latest head coach to be sacked in the Belgian Pro League. After his sides shock 1-0 defeat to bottom of the table Beerschot, the KV Mechelen board decided to end his tenure in charge. Last year, Hasi steered Mechelen clear of relegation and almost got them to a to six finish. This year, they initially flirted with the top six before plummeting down towards the relegation play-offs.

With Hasi out, the narrative will switch to the chances of a reunion with the sides former head coach, Wouter Vrancken. Since leaving the side he has taken charge of Genk and Gent, but neither stint was as successful as he would have hoped. During his time with Mechelen he won the cup and was a fan favourite for playing entertaining football. For Vrancken himself, he will need to rebuild his reputation at a club that isn’t considered a top six side in Belgium. Mechelen would make sense, but rarely does a return to a former club work out for a head coach.

For now, the side have put Fred Vanderbiest in temporary charge. His immediate job will be to keep the side out of the bottom four and safe from any outside chances of relegation.
