The late Steven Skrzybski goal that saw Friday night’s Bundesliga fixture between VfL Wolfsburg and Holstein Kiel end in a 2-2 draw naturally left VfL trainer Ralph Hasenhüttl and club manager Sebastian Schindzielorz lamenting their team’s missed chances to put the game to bed. The hosting Wölfe dominated the game and led 2-1 until the 80th minute.
Hasenhüttl and Schindzielorz remained highly critical of every aspect of the result, from the ill-disciplined set-piece defending that allowed David Zec to open the scoring in the 13th to the inability of the German Wolves to net an equalizer during an unproductive first-half.
“The first half was a total non-performance,” Hasenhüttl remarked at the post-match-presser. “In the second half, we were able to cause the Kielers problems. But we must accept the fact that we conceded two goals. It hurts that we’re missing two points.”
“We have to defend energetically,” Schindzielorz said when discussing Kiel’s two goals. “We didn’t do that early and found ourselves chasing the game
“Grabbing the lead is not enough,” Schindzielorz continued. “You have to take them out in the end and we didn’t do that.”
Schindzielorz had plenty more direct and comprehensive comments to add to his angry rant at the presser. The newly-elevated sporting director -following Marcel Schäfer’s departure – sounded much like Schäfer often did when commenting on Wolfsburg’s constant underachieving.
“We start the game uncleanly, with technical errors, not contesting loose balls, and sloppy passing,” Schindzielorz said. “We have to play these simple situations cleanly and dictate the rhythm when playing at home.
“You can only do that if you play with clarity of mind and self-confidence in your game,” the sporting director continued. “In the end you don’t deserve it if you don’t. Now we’re looking at two points we should have captured.”
