Liverpool are thriving under Arne Slot, currently sitting top of the Premier League after six matches.

The squad that the new Reds’ boss inherited has worked hard for him and some players, such as Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch, have come on leaps and bounds since the end of last season.

Slotball seems to have solidified Liverpool defensively but is still producing free-flowing, attacking football and plenty of goals.

There was one man that Slot wanted to add to his team for this season though, Martin Zubimendi, and although the 25-year-old’s move to Anfield never materialised it hasn’t stopped dominating headlines.

Zubimendi does not regret staying at Real Sociedad

Although Zubimendi eventually made the decision to remain at his boyhood club rather than make the move to Merseyside, his future still remains very uncertain and a transfer to Liverpool may not be off the cards.

Despite recent reports, Zubimendi has reaffirmed his decision to remain at Real Sociedad in a recent press conference for the team.

“My philosophy is to do in each moment what comes from within me. So far, that has worked well for me. It's true that there was a lot of noise, and I went through uncomfortable moments. The best thing for me was to stay here, and I’m happy and at peace,” Zubimendi said, via Noticias de Gipuzkoa.

When asked if he regretted his decision, Zubimendi laughed and said: “Of course I don't regret it, I can't think that because of four or five games at the start of the season.

“I made my decision from within, I believed it was the best, and the results don’t affect me. I see potential in this team; you only have to watch us train, and I’m excited to have a good season."

Do Liverpool still need Zubimendi?

Liverpool never moved on to an alternative target once it was clear that Zubimendi wouldn’t be moving to Anfield.

The holding midfield role has instead been occupied this season by Ryan Gravenberch, who is doing an outstanding job and, although the Dutchman's performances have earned him a multitude of praise, all of the Reds' problems have not been solved.

Liverpool’s squad depth in the defensive midfield is very limited, with Wataru Endo being the only natural option there.

Endo is solid but is aging and clearly isn’t fancied by Arne Slot and therefore the arrival of another number six to support and push Gravenberch could still be welcomed at Liverpool.
