Speaking to ARD, 1860 Munich shareholder Hasan Ismaik wants to sell his shares in the club but things will not be so easy.
Ismaik has been a shareholder of 1860 since 2011, even saving the club from bankruptcy. During his time at the club, he has tried to fight the 50+1 rule to gain further ownership of the Grünwald club, as he actually owns 60% of shares at the club, but due to the DFL rules, he only owns 49% of voting rights.
Speaking to ARD ahead of a documentary on 1860 to be released later this year, Ismaik said:
“I want to sell the club and just be a fan. I just want to be a fan of 1860. I think 1860 needs someone new – they don’t need Hasan. If I stay, this club will stay the way it is,”
However, things will not be easy to wrestle the fallen giant off of Ismaik’s hands. Not only will they need ‘a plan’, but the challenge to take the club back up the leagues could burn a deep hole in the prospective investor’s pockets:
“Anyone who thinks they have the ability to buy 1860. My door is open. But if they don’t have 200 to 300 million, it won’t work for them.”
The Munich based are still struggling financially and were at risk of a potential points deduction earlier on in the season. TZ München reports that the asking price for the team based in the southern suburbs of Munich will be around €25m to buy out Ismaik. The investor bought his shares back in 2011 for a total of €18m.
Despite wanting to part ways with the club, the Kuwaiti has one dream for 1860:
“I pray that the club will one day play in the first division. That is my dream – and I wish that this dream will come true before I die: a derby in Munich between Bayern and 1860 in the first Bundesliga.”
During Ismaik’s tenure, he refused to pay 1860’s license for the 3.Liga back in 2017, and this resulted in them being relegated further to the Regionalliga. They were promoted at the first time of asking and have languished in the third tier ever since. 1860 are currently ninth in the 3.Liga.
