John Egan could potentially make the move to Turf Moor after leaving Bramall Lane this summer.

Burnley are weighing up an approach for ex-Sheffield United centre-back John Egan.

This is according to Alan Nixon, who believes the Clarets are considering a move for the Republic of Ireland international, following his departure from the Blades earlier this summer.

He left Bramall Lane following an injury-hit 2023/24 season, with the player spending most of the campaign out with an Achilles injury that he sustained against West Ham United in September.

The Blades weren't exactly solid at the back during his time on the pitch, with United losing 8-0 against Newcastle United during the early stages of the season, but their defence didn't improve after he was sidelined.

With this in mind and the fact he has been such an asset for Chris Wilder's side during his time in South Yorkshire, it was a bit of a surprise when he was let go by the Blades, who could come to regret their decision to release him.

However, United operated with a back four in their opening league game last night and with the club having other centre-back options, it doesn't look as though Wilder's side will reignite their interest in him anytime soon.

Instead, a move to one of their potential promotion rivals may be on the cards for the defender.

Burnley weigh up John Egan move

Egan is now on the Clarets' radar, according to Nixon.

With Dara O'Shea being linked with a move to Brentford, the former Blade could potentially be lined up as a replacement for his fellow Irishman, who could potentially seal a Premier League return this summer after the Lancashire side's relegation.

And with Egan a free agent and over the age of 24, the Clarets won't have to pay out any compensation to get a deal over the line for the 31-year-old, who could prove to be a very shrewd addition for Scott Parker's side.

However, Parker's side will surely need to offload some centre-backs if they recruit Egan.

John Egan would be a good addition for Burnley on key condition

Egan is an experienced player at this level and if he can fully shake off his previous injury woes, he could be a regular starter.

The fact he's a free agent makes him an even more attractive player to bring in and the Clarets should be looking to offer him a deal if Parker feels the Irishman could be a key part of his plans.

At 31, the centre-back should be able to be a real asset at Turf Moor for at least a couple of years.

However, the Clarets need to offload some centre-backs before the window closes if Egan is to be seen as a good signing.

Offloading Luke McNally has to be a priority considering he hasn't been a key part of the Clarets' plans in recent seasons and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the likes of Maxime Esteve and O'Shea follow him out of the exit door.
