49ers Enterprises set to complete Rangers takeover | OneFootball

American investors, led by healthcare mogul Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises president Paraag Marathe, have reached an agreement in principle to take over Rangers.

Negotiations have been ongoing for over three months, with the investment group working closely with Rangers’ current major shareholders.

The parties have agreed on several possible routes for acquiring the 51% majority stake 49ers and co want, and final details are expected to be finalised in the next few months.

If they can get a deal over the line, Rangers will become the second British club in the 49ers’ portfolio after they bought a 10% stake in Leeds United back in 2018.

Their initial stake in Leeds eventually led to a full £170 million takeover in July 2023.

The 49ers deal would further increase the presence of United States investors in Scottish football.

Rangers would be the latest Scottish club under American owners after Dundee, Dundee United, Hibernian, and St Johnstone.

Atlanta United president Darren Eales also holds a minority stake in Aberdeen, while Las Vegas-based businessmen James Bord and Evan Sofer recently took over Dunfermline Athletic.

The 49ers have been scouring the globe for investment opportunities in sport, and Rangers has emerged as a lucrative option.

The Gers are one of the biggest names in European football if you ignore the financial gulf between the Scottish top flight and the English Premier League.

Compared to clubs of a similar stature in other countries, Rangers offer a relatively affordable entry point for investors thanks to Scotland’s smaller domestic market.

With a 50,000-seater stadium at Ibrox and a strong international following – particularly in North America, where more than 30 official supporters’ clubs operate – Rangers acquisition could be a masterstroke for the 49ers.

The takeover could be a massive game-changer for Rangers, who have struggled to dethrone Celtic since they last won the Premiership in 2020/21.
