Ajax 0-3 NEC Nijmegen: Eredivisie title race is open once again

The Eredivisie title race is wide open again. After PSV won in the final seconds at Feyenoord earlier in the day, a stunned Ajax suffered a painful defeat at home to NEC. So the last two rounds can still go either way, with a difference of just one point.

Nerves were rife at the Johan Cruyff Arena, especially with fans keeping an eye on PSV’s away 3-2 comeback in Rotterdam. Making matters worse for the Amsterdam faithful, NEC hadn’t come to the city to make up the numbers, and they punished a lacklustre Ajax attack with a deadly trio of second-half strikes.

Firstly, Ajax old boy Sontje Hansen powered in low from range in the 59th minute. Brayann Pereira made it double delight just eight minutes later, as he tapped home a parry from Remko Pasveer from a tight angle on the right.

The final nail in the coffin came from Sami Ouaissa in the 82nd minute. He cut in from the right and powered low back the way he’d come to wrong-foot a stumbling Pasveer.

There’s just one point between PSV and Ajax, and now, the Amsterdam club will nervously try and stay on track with the final two fixtures of the season: away at Groningen and at home to Twente. PSV end their season with a game at home against Heracles Almelo, before they face Sparta Rotterdam away.
