After more than a year, David Alaba returned to play for Real Madrid earlier today, coming on as a substitute in the 4-1 win over Las Palmas.

The 32-year-old had been out of action since suffering an ACL injury in December 2023, during a game against Villarreal.

Having undergone surgery and then worked long and hard on his road to recovery, the Austrian international resumed training with his teammates a few weeks ago and finally made his return on the pitch today, to a raucous ovation from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alaba elated

Having come on in place of Antonio Rudiger in the 76th minute, Alaba helped Real Madrid see out the game without any late lapses.

Following the match, the central defender spoke to RMTV and opened up on how he felt after making his long-awaited comeback.

“I am very happy. It is a special day for me. I want to thank the fans. I have waited a long time for this moment because last year was very tough and long,” said Alaba.

“I have worked very hard every day, waiting for this moment. Returning at home has been very beautiful.”

Alaba went on to express gratitude towards everyone who helped him along his road to recovery, saying:

“The team has helped me a lot, and without my teammates, the medical staff, the physios, and the rehabilitation team, it would have been tougher. They have helped me a lot, working very hard every day.”

Talking about the match and the performance of the team on the day against Las Palmas, the veteran defender, who is reportedly keen on renewing his contract, added:

“We played very well. For me, the match was top, and we deserved the victory.”

Alaba’s return comes at a crucial time for Real Madrid, who have not been at their best defensively, having lost senior players like Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao to injuries.
