Ruben Amorim has said the noise during Manchester United’s dramatic win against Lyon at Old Trafford is the ‘best sound in the world’.
Manchester United reached the semi-finals of the Europa League after an astonishing game against the French side on Thursday night. On a rollercoaster night, the Red Devils took a 2-0 lead through Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, but were pegged back as goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico forced extra time.
Despite Tolisso’s red card for the visitors, Lyon scored twice in extra time through Rayan Cherki and Alexander Lacazette to seemingly end United’s European dream.
Bruno Fernandes pulled a goal back via the penalty spot, before a sensational finish saw the home side turn the game around. Kobbie Mainoo’s 120th-minute goal appeared to have sent the tie to penalties, only for Harry Maguire to head home a winner just seconds later.
It was the first match in major European football history to see five goals scored after extra-time, while it’s only the second 5-4 win in Manchester United’s entire history.
Speaking at full-time, Amorim said the noise around Manchester United’s late goals was the ‘best sound’ he’s ever heard.
“I think, if you see the goal of Kobbie and Harry Maguire, the sound of the stadium was the best sound I ever [heard]. You want to keep that. Sometimes people want to keep a lot of things, shirts and, I just want to keep that sound. It’s the best sound in the world.
“It’s a special moment. It was amazing. When you score two goals in the end, like that, you hear the sound of the fans and it pays off any suffering or frustration you have during the season. And, we know again, we know that we are underperforming. We deserve all the critics, but we still have time to make something special of this season, so we have to think like that and to be positive.”
