Sami Mokbel reports for the BBC that Declan Rice missed Arsenal’s game against Liverpool at the weekend with a muscular issue which is believed to be a hamstring strain.

Mokbel adds that there is hope the injury isn’t serious, but club medics won’t take any unnecessary risks with Rice ahead of the final two games of the club campaign.

The report also mentions that Rice is almost certain to be named in England’s squad for their upcoming fixtures in June, so Arsenal may have to get in contact with the national team to keep them updated on the likelihood of the midfielder featuring over the break.

Mikel Arteta said on the day of the Liverpool game that Rice “couldn’t even train, so he’s injured unfortunately and couldn’t make the game”.

Whilst Arsenal fans will be worried by the mention of a hamstring injury, given the lengthy absences for Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Kai Havertz this season, there’s nothing to indicate Rice’s problem is nearly as bad.

Even so, it’s a worry for the Gunners, particularly as their campaign isn’t quite done yet.

Arsenal still need two points to mathematically guarantee Champions League qualification for next season, assuming they don’t get any help from elsewhere.

One point would probably be enough, given the Gunners’ goal difference, but ending the campaign with two defeats would certainly be a significant risk.

Arsenal face Newcastle United on Sunday, then Southampton away from home a week later.
