Following the incidents that took place in the Madrid derby a few weeks ago, the Anti-violence Commission, which reports back to the National Sports Council has asked for the full closure of the Estadio Metropolitano.

This news comes via ElDesmarque, who reports that the commission has asked for this closure to be for two weeks, and is a step beyond the closure of just one stand which has currently been agreed.

This closure would affect Atlético Madrid’s home ties against Leganes, Lille and Las Palmas, and would see these matches be played behind closed doors.

These matches will already be played with the South stand of the stadium closed, but it remains to be seen whether these recommendations will have any effect in getting the punishment changed.

This recommendation is a step towards a much harsher punishment to eradicate hate crime in the stands of Spanish football, and if acted upon could set a precedent of harsher punishments in the future.

The Spanish government has clearly decided that now is the time to put a stop to violence and hate crimes in Spanish football once and for all, and this recommendation is evidence of that.
