Antonio Briseño has claimed that Chivas are a much bigger club than América.

Stoking the flames ahead of Sunday’s Clásico Nacional between the two sides, the centre-back claimed the Azulcrema suffer from a lack of identity.

Briseño was obviously casting aspersions on América fielding foreigners, which is in stark contrast to the Flock’s policy of Mexican players only.

“You put the four biggest and for example Pumas, there are teams with more titles,” Briseño told a press conference.

“We have identity, we play with Mexican cigars, we have greatness, the second with the most titles, the one with the most fans and who has an identity.

“That is much more than a title of difference, we can win the title the next tournament and now, I don’t think we are on par, we are bigger than América, they have no identity.”

Las Águilas will travel to the Estadio Azteca as favourites after a fabulous start to the season under new manager Santiago Solari.

Chivas, on the other hand, have had serious trouble converting draws into wins and lie in ninth in the Guard1anes 2021 table as a result.

Despite the early-season disparity between the rivals’ form, Briseño believes all bets are off when it comes to a Clásico.

“They are football matches. They have won. But we know that we have the capacity to face those games.

“They are a team that has played well but it is a Clásico. The statistics are irrelevant and it will be 11 against 11.”

Briseño has nailed down a starting place in recent weeks, with the 27-year-old centre-back almost certain to get the nod from manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich this weekend.
