Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour admits the club’s inability to get a striker signing over the line in January could cost them the Premier League title.

The Gunners did not bring in any new signings in January despite hoping to sign a forward following injures to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus.

Speaking ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle, Arteta admitted he was “disappointed” not to add a striker in the window.

“We had a clear intention,” he said.

“We haven’t achieved it so we are disappointed. But we are aware that we only want to bring certain types of players, so we have to be disciplined. We couldn’t do it for certain reasons and we have to expect that, it was a combination of things.”

And while Parlour, who won three Premier League titles with the club, understands the reasons for not signing a forward, he admits it could come back to bite them.

Speaking to Hayters TV in association with Netbet Online Casino, he said: “It’s a hard window to buy the players you want.

“I’m sure they were always looking around to see who was available and working behind the scenes to see if they can get them in but obviously they don’t just want to go and waste money for the sake of it.

“That’s probably what it came down to in the end. They probably thought there’s not a player out there that’s going to improve the squad.

“Everybody is a little bit overpriced as well in this window and people are quite desperate to get players in.

“They’ve made that decision and now they’ve just got to stick with the players they’ve got. They’ve got to get everybody fit and firing on all cylinders and see how they go.

“At the end of the season, it could be that which doesn’t make them win the Premier League and they might be kicking themselves but they’ve got to get on with it now and forget about the transfer window and concentrate on the next three or four months of the season, keep playing like they did against Man City and you just hope Liverpool slip up now.”
