Arsenal academy graduate Vivienne Lia has joined Championship club Southampton on loan for the remainder of this season.
The 18-year-old is a skillful winger who has risen through the ranks of Arsenal’s academy. She has made two first team appearances and regularly trains with the senior squad. Lia played a key role for the Gunners in preseason, providing an assist in a 3-0 victory over Southampton.
The youngster has also demonstrated her talent on the international stage, regularly representing England at under-19 level. Lia has joined Southampton following the signing of her first professional contract with the Gunners last week.
Upon joining Southampton, Lia said: “I’m excited to get started of course, I feel like this will be a really good part of my development.”
Southampton’s head coach Remi Allen added: “We’re delighted to welcome Viv to the group, she’s a player we’ve watched for a while and we’re excited to add her quality and enthusiasm to the squad.”
The arrival of the youngster will add much-needed depth to the Saints’ attacking options. She is a versatile player who can also feature at right-back if required. This move will enable Lia to gain exposure and regular minutes against tough opponents in the Championship.
The youngster is highly regarded by Arsenal and this loan will aid her overall development. Southampton currently sit in sixth but are only five points behind the Championship leaders. Vivienne Lia will hope to help Southampton to pick up points and put pressure on the top teams. The Saints next face Sunderland at St. Mary’s Stadium on January 19th.
