Real Madrid have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Arsenal defender William Saliba, holding ongoing discussions with the player’s entourage over a potential future transfer, according to L’Equipe.
The 24-year-old centre-back, who has emerged as one of the most composed and dominant defenders in European football, is under contract at the Emirates until 2027.
However, that has not deterred the Spanish giants from laying the groundwork for a move.
Saliba, a product of the Saint-Etienne academy, has been on Real Madrid’s radar for several seasons, with the club closely tracking his development since his early days in Ligue 1.
With Carlo Ancelotti’s side keen to reinforce their backline this summer, Saliba is now reportedly among their top defensive targets.
L’Equipe describes the Frenchman as one of Real Madrid’s “concrete priorities” in the next phase of their long-term squad evolution.
The Spanish club are said to be looking to strengthen their central defensive options amid ongoing concerns over depth and the aging profiles of some of their current defenders.
It is understood that while Saliba remains committed to Arsenal, the allure of playing for Real Madrid, the club he reportedly views as the pinnacle of world football, could tempt him if the Gunners fail to match his ambitions.
Sources close to the situation suggest that Madrid are willing to be patient, potentially biding their time until 2026, when Saliba enters the final year of his contract and his price tag could significantly drop.

Arsenal, for their part, are determined to hold on to the French international.
Mikel Arteta views him as a cornerstone of the club’s future and a vital figure in their efforts to consistently compete for major honours.
Arsenal have already tabled a renewal proposal, aiming to secure Saliba’s long-term future, but the onus is now on the club to convince him that the Emirates can be the stage for title-winning football.
The Gunners are working on a plan for a new centre-back if they lose Saliba to Real Madrid.
