This weekend’s Premier League action gets underway with a clash between Everton and Arsenal at Goodison Park on Saturday at 12:30pm.
Arsenal (4-3-3): Raya; Partey, Saliba, Kiwior, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Jorginho, Rice; Nwaneri, Merino, Martinelli
While the Toffees go into this match following a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in Wednesday’s Merseyside derby, Arsenal returned from the international break with a 2-1 win over Fulham.
Mikel Merino and the returning Bukayo Saka scored for Mikel Arteta’s side but the win came at a cost with a couple of key players leaving the field with injury.
They could therefore go into their final visit to Goodison Park with a weakened side as they try to hold on to second spot in the Premier League. This game will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1.
The big news for Arsenal ahead of their trip to Goodison is that defender Gabriel will miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.
Gabriel picked up the injury in the 2-1 win over Fulham on Tuesday and is now hoping to return at the start of next season, set to undergo surgery.
Jurrien Timber also came off against Fulham and is a doubt, while Ben White was ruled out before the clash with the Cottagers and is unlikely to return to the Gunners’ starting line-up on Merseyside. Thomas Partey could deputise at right-back.
That means Jorginho may start in midfield alongside Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.
Saka scored on his return from a three-month layoff in midweek but may not yet be ready to start. Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli are expected to line up in a front three for the visitors.
Even the most optimistic Arsenal fan will have likely given up hope of winning the Premier League title this season with a 12-point gap to bridge to leaders Liverpool and only eight matches to go.
While finishing top is still mathematically in reach for the Gunners they will give it their all, but, make no mistake about it, the Champions League is their ultimate goal this season.
Arteta’s side are through to the competition’s quarter-finals after a convincing triumph over PSV in the last 16.
But awaiting them in the quarter-finals are reigning European champions Real Madrid and Arteta will not want to take any risks with any of his players ahead of next week’s first leg.
There are still four points between second-placed Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in third, and the north London outfit are 11 points clear of fifth. So the Gunners should have already done enough to hold on to place in the top four and spot at European football’s top table next season.
