Arsenal have exited this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League at the quarter-final stage with a 3-1 aggregate defeat to VfL Wolfsburg.

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium eight days’ ago and it was VfL Wolfsburg who ran out 2-0 winners in the second leg at the Volkswagen Arena this evening.

The first half was dominated by the hosts and they scored from their first real opportunity. A corner kick was delivered from the right and the ball eventually found it’s way to the boot of Jill Roord who flicked home the opener against her former club.

The She-Wolves thought that they had then made it 2-0 from another corner kick but Tabea Wassmuth converted from an offside position.

Steph Catley then saw a shot saved by VfL Wolfsburg keeper Almuth Schult before Manuela Zinsberger tipped a dangerous cross over the bar at the other end.

Arsenal were a little bit more lively early in the second half and a Schult error almost provided Vivianne Miedema with an opportunity to level the scores.

The decisive moment came 17 minutes from time when VfL Wolfsburg grabbed their second goal of the game. Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir put a cross into the Arsenal box and the unfortunate Leah Williamson diverted the ball into her own net.

Arsenal were desperate to rescue their European title hopes and Miedema almost immediately headed against the bar before Williamson saw an effort pushed onto the post by Schult. The Gunners kept pushing hard but the hosts coped well as they ended the tie 2-0 winners on the night and 3-1 victors on aggregate.

Arsenal will now turn their attentions towards their domestic title push and a fixture at Leicester City on Sunday.
