This will be a consistent theme for Aston Villa in April. The players will need to quickly shift gears a lot between the various competitions. In the immediate focus, a Champions League clash in Paris waits for Unai Emery's men.
After defeating Nottingham Forest, Villa will now play PSG on Wednesday for the first of two legs. Usually teams are worried about being fresh or having too many games in close proximity to each other. As evidenced by the eight changes to start this past Saturday's match, that will be less of a concern for AVFC.
Had the side played as well as they did in the opening 20 minutes, Emery would have likely left Marcus Rashford and John McGinn, for example, on the bench. At the very least, he likely wouldn't have brought them on as soon as he did into the second half in order to help preserve their legs.
As that game unfolded, however, it was clear that a change needed to be made. And once again, the Spanish boss showed how well he is able to gauge the pulse of his side and make those needed adjustments.
Watching how confident Emery is in making wholesale switch-ups should show how deep this squad is and how much more willing the Spaniard is to utilize his options. For players, it means needing to always perform and give full effort. Everyone knows that if an area on the pitch isn't producing, there is a quality second, or in some cases, third option to be used as a substitute.
