Lucas Digne (31) has become a fixture in Didier Deschamps’ France squads this season. A regular for Aston Villa too, he has told Foot Mercato that he believes he is playing the best football of his career.
Digne has featured 12 times in all competitions for Aston Villa this season and clearly has the trust of manager Unai Emery. The same goes for Didier Deschamps. In the absence of the injured Lucas Hernandez, he has successfully fought his way ahead of Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy in the pecking order for Les Bleus.
“I feel as though I’m playing the best football of my career,” the former Everton and Barcelona full-back told Foot Mercato. “I am a happy footballer, a happy man, and a happy father. I’m loving what I’m doing and I just want to make the most of every moment.”
With Aston Villa, the Frenchman, who has previously competed in Europe with the likes of Lille OSC, Paris Saint-Germain, AS Roma, and Barcelona, is competing in the Champions League, a challenge that he is relishing. “It is a pleasure to be back in this competition. Villa are a big club with an impressive history. It’s an incredible feeling to be able to offer these European nights to our fans and share them together, and write a new chapter in the history of this club,” said Digne.
Digne, whose contract at Aston Villa runs until the summer of 2026, also paid homage to his former club Everton for offering him the opportunity to play in the Premier League.
“Everton gave me the chance to take responsibility in the team and to discover the best league in the world with some incredible fans. It is a historic club and I shard lots of great moments with them,” said the Frenchman.
