Atalanta have barely been able to field Giorgio Scalvini and Gianluca Scamacca this campaign, as the two suffered different season-ending injuries shortly after returning from ACL tears.
The defender had a relapse of a shoulder injury, while the striker damaged a tendon in his quad in his first game back. Both will undergo surgery and will be on the mend for several months, as CEO Luca Percassi told Mediaset.
“Scamacca and Scalvini will go under the knife, and it’s a big pity because Atalanta lose two players that could have helped up a lot and didn’t deserve it. They’ll return stronger than before, but we know that they will be back only next season. We’re very sorry.” “The injuries happened right before the end of the window. We’re happy with our signings, as we didn’t expect to have to intervene. Daniel Maldini perfectly fits our philosophy. If there are good solutions, we’re ready to seize them to give the coach useful players.”
Scalvini appeared seven times with Atalanta in 2024/2025, while Scamacca played just a handful of minutes.
La Dea, which had already lost Odilon Kossounou, snapped up Stefan Posch from Bologna on deadline day. Instead, they didn’t bring in a new striker. Maldini replaced Nicolò Zaniolo, who headed to Fiorentina.
Losing an entire season for two separate injuries is a tough blow for everybody involved. The brass was in a pickle, but another forward would have helped as they have put a lot of miles on Ademola Lookman, Mateo Retegui, and Charles De Ketelaere, and it’s starting to show.
