Atletico Madrid maintained their incredible run of form with a narrow 1-0 victory over Getafe at the Estadio Metropolitano today – their 11th straight win across all competitions.
The result moved Diego Simeone’s side level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga and extended their unbeaten head-to-head against Getafe to 26 matches.
The hosts failed to stamp their authority on the initial exchanges, with only one shot on target in a rather mundane opening period.
Samuel Lino was culpable of two guilt-edged chances, volleying wide from cross-field deliveries by Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul.
Giuliano Simeone headed wide a gilt-edged opportunity, glancing it with his head as Atletico failed to find a way through before the break.
Getafe showed very little attacking intent without Angel Rodriguez and failed to test Jan Oblak in a forgettable opening period.
They came close to taking a shock lead in the second half, as Jose Maria Gimenez deflected a corner inches past his own goal.
The breakthrough finally came after 69 minutes through an excellently worked move involving two second-half substitutes.
Angel Correa’s pinpoint cross found Alexander Sorloth at the back post, and he headed into the bottom corner to end his three-match drought.
Atletico comfortably saw out the game and will head into their trip to Barcelona next weekend in a buoyant mood.
