Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen wasn’t the only player to write more Bundesliga history on Saturday. After breaking a club record with his fourth consecutive clean sheet last weekend against SC Freiburg, Dahmen has not conceded a goal in 523 minutes of top flight football.
The 26-year-old inches closer to Timo Hildebrand’s all-time record of 885 minutes without conceding a goal. Hildebrand set the record whilst representing VfB Stuttgart between May and October of 2003. Hildebrand would go on to be capped seven times for the German national team.
Dahmen (capped eight times at Germany U21 level) once appeared to be a candidate for Germany’s future. That was before SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu became the regular No. 1 to represent Germany at the highest youth level. It presently might be the case that Dahmen switches to England.
Atubolu wrote his own piece of club history with his sixth consecutive clean sheet against RB Leipzig in the Saturday evening Topspiel. The 15-times-capped Germany U21 international passed SCF keeper Richard Golz’s record of 510 goalless minutes in the 26th minute of the match.
The fact that Freiburg-Leipzig ended in a 0-0 draw now gives Atubolu 576 minutes of Bundesliga football without conceding. The two club record breakers still have some way to go before catching up with Hildebrand, but may find hope of keeping their streak going into the coming international break.
Atubolu’s Breisgauer face Mainz next weekend. Despite their incredible run-of-form, Bo Henriksen’s Rheinhessen have only scored 42 league goals this year while Augsburg host Ralph Hasenhüttl’s inconsistent VfL Wolfsburg.
