Austin FC came out on top 1-0 over LA Galaxy this Saturday at Q2 Stadium in MLS play. The winning goal was scored in the 81st minute, as Brandon Vázquez finished a low pass from Zan Kolmanic. It was a hard-fought game, with chances on both ends, and only settled late after numerous lengths of tenacity. The host team departed with three points from an opponent who kept pressing, keep generating opportunities, and keep subjecting the Texas defense to pressure.
Vázquez was at the center of Austin's two greatest opportunities for chances during the second half. First, he had the best opportunity in the game when he had the one-on-one with the keeper after a play arranged by Osman Bukari. Vázquez fired it hard, but John McCarthy stopped it. The forward did not allow it to faze him. Late in the game, he was in the perfect position to be on the receiving end of Kolmanic's cross and score the only goal of the game. The shot was low and acute, securing the victory and sending Austin FC back into the win column.
In spite of a tight scoreline, the match was sometimes intense and marked by powerful attacking moves. Only seven minutes had been played when Myrto Uzuni attempted to try a bicycle kick that sailed just over the bar. Later in the first half, Gallagher came in at the perfect moment to cut off a threatening Galaxy chance, denying Joseph Paintsil a shot. Austin was close, too, when Vázquez's shot went inches wide of the far post. The visitors hit back with some speed and some threatening shots, making it close going into halftime.
This game featured the 75th consecutive MLS sellout at Q2 Stadium. That's the league's latest longest streak and says a lot about the high level of attachment that exists between fans and Austin FC. The stadium has been a key part of the club's push, with the loyalty of the supporters having an effect on the atmosphere of every home game. There were 20,738 of them who crammed into the seats on Saturday, watching their side take yet another win from one of the West's most experienced conference opponents.
