FC Barcelona have depended a lot on La Masia starlet in recent seasons. While it might have come about due to the club’s immense financial struggles, the quality of players who have come through is honestly frightening.
One of the early names who broke through into the first team at a young age and immediately displaced a club legend like Jordi Alba was Alejandro Balde. The young Spaniard performed so well when breaking out that he got called up for the World Cup in 2022.
However, the 21-year-old suffered an injury last season that kept him out for almost the entire second half of the campaign. This seems to have curtailed his progress to an extent despite Hansi Flick placing a lot of trust in him.
Balde has made a successful return from his injury, to be fair, and hasn’t seemingly lost any of his pace or his electric ability but his decision-making has often let Barcelona fans scratch their heads. The Spaniard needs to be smarter with his crosses into the box.
Now, as per Fichajes, Barcelona are willing to let the 21-year-old youngster leave the club for a transfer fee of around €55m. The club has a plan to replace their academy graduate, having set their sights on signing Alphonso Davies on a free transfer.
Davies is in the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich and it seems like he isn’t going to put pen to paper on a new contract with the German club. The Canadian needs no introduction and would be a good option for FC Barcelona.
We covered a story some time ago revealing that PSG were interested in signing Balde as a potential replacement for Nuno Mendes, who has been linked with an exit from the French club. Thus, one could see a merry-go-round of left-backs next summer.
The Canadian would be a good option for FC Barcelona but their best course of action would be to trust Balde, who himself has an immense ceiling. It is a matter of time before he hits those heights and let’s wait and see how it plays out.
