Recent reports from Fichajes suggest that Premier League giants Chelsea and Newcastle United are both keen on signing Barcelona defender Eric Garcia.

It is said that Both clubs see the Spanish international as a valuable addition to their defensive setups and are exploring the possibility of bringing him in.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are reportedly open to negotiating his departure, with a potential transfer fee in the region of €25 million.

Premier League teams in the race

Eric Garcia has built a reputation as a versatile and dependable player over the years. He is capable of playing as a centre-back, full-back, or even in a defensive midfield role.

This flexibility has made him an attractive prospect for clubs like Chelsea, who are seeking to stabilise their backline after inconsistent performances from players like Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile.

Newcastle United, too, are in the market for reinforcements, aiming to add both depth and quality to their defence, which has faltered at crucial moments.

What about Barcelona?

At Barcelona, however, Garcia’s role in the squad has diminished this season. Manager Hansi Flick has largely overlooked him since his return from an injury earlier in the campaign.

Although he initially featured in seven of Barcelona’s first eight league matches this season, an injury in mid-October sidelined him for over a month.

Despite his versatility, including his ability to play in the number six role, Barcelona appear to be well-stocked in the positions Garcia can cover. Considering the financial pressures the club is under, a January departure for Garcia could make sense.

Selling him would not only ease the wage bill but also generate much-needed funds to facilitate future signings.

This move could benefit both the player and the club, as Garcia seeks more regular playing time and Barcelona look to strengthen their financial position.
