Barcelona have been thrown out of the Copa de la Reina after fielding an ineligible player in their win over Osasuna.
They won the Spanish Super Cup at the weekend and extended their unbeaten run domestically to 58 games but their hopes of adding the Copa de la Reina to their trophy cabinet and complete a potential quadruple this season have now been dashed.
The decision to expel Barcelona from the competition was confirmed by the Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee on Tuesday morning.
It relates to their 9-0 win over Osasuna earlier this month in which they used Geyse Ferreira in the victory despite her suspension after being sent off with Madrid CFF last season.
Barcelona claim that they had not been notified of the ban by the RFEF and Osasuna subsequently reported them for fielding an ineligible player.
It also means a new name will be etched onto the trophy and ends the Blaugrana’s streak of three successive victories in the competition.
However, the club have 10 days to lodge an appeal against the decision.
