After establishing himself as a key player in the FC Barcelona starting XI, Ronald Araujo lost his guaranteed spot this season following an injury that required him to undergo surgery last July, ruling him out for months together.
When Araujo returned to action in January, Hansi Flick had already settled on the central defensive pairing of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez. This led the Uruguayan to seriously consider leaving during the winter transfer window.
However, Barça sporting director Deco and Flick managed to convince him to continue and even sign a renewal, although with a potential escape route in the summer as the new deal includes a €60 million exit clause active only between 1 and 15 July this summer.
The existence of the said clause as well as his drop in the pecking order had given way to speculations of a summer exit.
However, during an interview earlier this week, Araujo insisted he is very happy at Barcelona, suggesting he is not thinking about an exit.
Building on that, SPORT now reports that neither the player nor the club currently wishes to part ways in the summer.
The main factor behind Araujo’s change in mindset is Flick. Although the Barça second captain was not an automatic starter in the latter part of the season, he knows he has the German’s confidence.

Flick considers Araujo a unique defender – fast, strong, excellent in recovery situations, and capable of shutting down top forwards. The coach has made it clear that the Uruguayan will be important next season.
As such, Araujo is now determined to fight for a starting role in the coming season. He understands that Flick will help him fully adapt to the team’s new tactical approach.
The report further adds that Araujo is also eager to prove his quality. He was stung by the criticism following Barcelona’s Champions League semi-final exit against Inter Milan and wants to reaffirm his status as one of the world’s elite defenders.
The centre-back is aware that the upcoming season will be long and demanding and that every squad member will have a role to play.
So, despite having endured a tough season and the rumours surrounding his future, Araujo is fully committed to the project led by Flick.
