Barcelona have set their eyes on Sporting CP defender Ivan Fresneda for the summer transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes. The club believe that the player can be nourished into a world-class left-back in a few years.
However, the Spanish club will go for his signature only if they fail to get a permanent deal for Joao Cancelo, who is currently on a loan from Premier League side Manchester City.
Ivan Fresneda represented multiple clubs at youth level before Real Valladolid signed him in 2020. His impressive stint with the senior team attracted interest from multiple clubs across Europe. The race was ultimately won by Sporting CP last summer.

However, the Spanish defender has barely got the chance to play this season. He has featured only for 125 minutes across seven games and provided an assist. Despite being a talented footballer, he has yet to cement his place in the side.
Fresneda is good at tackling but needs to work on his aerial work. Being young, he has plenty of time to improve and turn into a reliable player. Hence, multiple clubs remain interested in acquiring his signature including Spanish giant Barcelona.
Barcelona had tried to sign Ivan Fresneda before Sporting CP lured him away. However, their continued interest in the player indicates that they are willing to make an official move. But that will happen only if they fail to sign Joao Cancelo on a permanent term.
Blaugrana have been impressed with the Portuguese’s performance this season. Hence, they want to settle his move once and for all. However, their continued financial struggles might not allow them to meet Manchester City’s demand.
In that case, Barcelona will have no option but to look for an alternative in the market. Fresneda could be a good option given he can be a long-term solution and has prior La Liga experience.
