A concerning update regarding the ongoing construction work at the Spotify Camp Nou has on Thursday come to the fore online.

Renovations, of course, have long been underway at Barcelona’s beloved home ground.

Amid efforts to bring the Camp Nou in line with some of football’s most modern stadiums, the Blaugrana brass green-lighted a major makeover, which will see everything from stands, facilities and fan experience upgraded.

The hope had long been that the venue would be opened to fans towards the end of this year, albeit at a reduced capacity of around 60%.

Recent months, however, have seen the return date pushed back further and further.

After a February comeback was first floated by vice-president Elena Fort earlier this month, treasurer Ferran Olivé then hinted that March was in fact a more realistic target.

If the latest word stemming from the media on Thursday is anything to go by, however, then even this may be on the optimistic side…

As per a report from Relevo:

‘FC Barcelona has already contacted BSM (Barcelona Serveis Municipals), the company that manages the Estadi Olímpic (Montjuïc) and which depends on the City Council, to extend the contract until the end of the season.’

This comes amid real concern that the Camp Nou will not be ready to act as a host stadium for the 2nd half of the Champions League campaign.

Should this prove the case, it is all but ruled out that Barcelona would alternate between Montjuïc and the Camp Nou for European and domestic fixtures over the final weeks of the term, pushing the latter ground’s opening date back to the beginning of the 2025/26 season.
