Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation could be in for a major shake-up this summer. This is because, according to RAC1, if the club successfully signs Joan Garcia from Espanyol, they may consider parting ways with long-time number one and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Catalans are pushing hard to land the 24-year-old Garcia, who has caught the attention of several top clubs in Europe. However, Barcelona are confident that their offer will convince the young goalkeeper to choose them.

A final decision is expected between Friday and Monday, following key talks between the player and his representatives.

Garcia has a €25 million release clause, and with Espanyol unable to stop the move, Barcelona are hoping to seal the deal quickly.

They see Garcia as a long-term solution, and that could lead to a tough decision involving Ter Stegen.

Too many top goalkeepers could force a sale

Barcelona’s interest in Garcia comes at a time when Wojciech Szczesny is also expected to extend his stay for another year.

That would leave the club with three high-level goalkeepers, a situation that is not ideal for a team where only one can play regularly.

For Ter Stegen, this uncertainty is worrying. The German is aiming to be his country’s starting goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup, and for that, he needs to play consistently.

If Barcelona cannot offer him regular minutes, he may have no choice but to leave.

Ter Stegen wants to continue

Right now, Ter Stegen does not want to leave the club. His contract runs until 2028, and he remains committed.

However, his market value has dropped in recent months, and the only outside interest appears to be coming from Saudi Arabian clubs.

Barcelona must now decide whether to back Garcia for the future or continue with Ter Stegen as their mainstay. A big decision looms at Camp Nou this summer.
