FC Barcelona continue to fly high this season under the guidance of Hansi Flick. Having shown tremendous character this season, they were truly tested to their limit in their last outing against SL Benfica. Fortunately, Barcelona did not just survive that game but ended up winning it despite being a man down.

Much of the credit for that recent victory has to go to Wojciech Szczesny, but also to his defenders and his midfielders as well. Frenkie de Jong, for instance, had yet another influential game in which he showcased the quality and composure he brings to this team.

Even with all the rumors floating around about his future and his contractual situation, the Dutchman continues to simply focus on his game. While it is true that the groundwork for potential negotiations over a possible contract renewal have already been established, a major step was still yet to be taken.

Now, however, it would appear that Barcelona have finally taken that initiative themselves. According to the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano, the Catalan club has now formally sent a new contract proposal to the 27-year-old midfielder and his entourage.

This new deal is reportedly going to extend the Dutch midfielder’s stay at the club for an additional three years, and his current deal is set to expire in 2027. While it is a proposal that is not as long in duration as some of the other renewals that the club has recently closed, it is still a significant one.

Moreover, the player’s salary will also reportedly stay the same as well, excluding his deferred payments. As for the time frame or objective of Barcelona regarding the sealing of this new deal, La Blaugrana hope to have it completely sorted out before the end of the current season.

Flick has showcased that he has complete faith in the Dutchman’s ability and quality, and it seems like De Jong’s feelings regarding his stay at the club are more positive now as well. Only time will tell what ends up happening, but this is a positive development for both Barcelona and potentially the player as well.
