The future of Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona appears increasingly settled. Gone are the days when the club, under financial pressure and limited by Fair Play rules, attempted to offload the Dutchman to relieve themselves of his high salary.

Now, in a season marked by his resurgence following a serious ankle injury, De Jong has become an essential piece in Hansi Flick’s Barcelona.

The midfielder, whose contract runs until 2026, has no desire to consider offers from other clubs and is fully committed to staying put with the Catalans.

Imminent meeting with De Jong’s agent

Now, as reported by SPORT, De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, plans to travel to Barcelona this week for their UEFA Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund and to meet with sporting director Deco to lay the groundwork for extending the player’s stay beyond 2026.

The Blaugrana are eager to secure De Jong’s future as soon as possible and have presented him and his agent with a renewal offer. This proposal aims to maintain his current salary scale but includes performance-based incentives.

In other words, to reach his current wage figure of €19 million, certain objectives would need to be met.

While no official response has come from De Jong’s camp, it is clear that the player is not entertaining interest from other clubs. He has made this clear to those close to him and his agent.

For this reason, significant progress may take place in the coming days, when Dursun visits Barcelona for their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Dortmund on Wednesday.

Fair Play concerns loom

Regardless of whether an agreement is reached during the upcoming meeting, Barcelona currently cannot guarantee De Jong’s new contract will be registered as they have once again lost their 1:1 spending rule status.

As such, Barça must be extremely cautious with how they allocate their limited salary budget. High on the club’s priority list this summer is also securing a new deal for Lamine Yamal.

But there is confidence within the club that the VIP seats at Camp Nou will be ready in the coming month. If done before 30 June, the revenue from the €100 million deal could be included in this year’s accounts, allowing them to return to the 1:1 ruling.
