A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has been omitted from the club’s matchday squad at the last minute.

The player in question? Gavi.

Youngster Gavi, for his part, was forced to sit out over the weekend, owing to what boss Hansi Flick described as a bout of fever.

The Spanish international had been pencilled in to feature from the off in Barca’s La Liga meeting with Real Sociedad, but was ultimately considered not to be in a fit state to participate.

And such woes, evidently, are continuing to plague Gavi on Wednesday.

Barcelona’s squad to face Benfica in the Champions League was unveiled a short time ago. And Gavi, despite having made the trip to Lisbon alongside the rest of Hansi Flick’s squad, was not even named amongst the substitutes:

As confirmed by journalist Adrià Albets:

‘Gavi had improved and this morning he didn’t have a fever but he did have a sore throat. Flick prefers not to force him and leaves him out of the squad so he can recover well.’
