The board at La Liga giants Barcelona are all set to trigger a one-year contract extension for a leading member of the club’s backline.
That’s according to Jijantes, who point towards Iñigo Martínez as the player in question.
Stopper Iñigo has for his part of course enjoyed a stellar individual campaign to date.
Taking full advantage of the long-term injuries suffered by both Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen, the former Athletic Club standout, prior to a recent injury blow, had established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet of head coach Hansi Flick.
Iñigo shone through all of his leadership, positional excellence and superb passing.
And such efforts, as alluded to above, evidently have not gone unnoticed on the part of those behind the scenes at the Camp Nou.
Iñigo’s current contract contains a clause that triggers an automatic one-year extension, in the case of the 33-year-old playing a minimum of 45 minutes in 60% of Barcelona’s fixtures this season.
As per a report from Jijantes, though:
‘The sporting management has decided not to wait until this figure is reached to close his renewal, given his excellent attitude and performance. The agreement will extend his contract until June 30, 2026.’
