Inter Milan suffered a devastating blow to their Serie A title hopes at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

The Nerazzurri conceded in stoppage time to fall to a 0-1 defeat. This was their fourth loss of the season in the league.

Inter’s momentum from the Champions League came crashing down. The team looked a shadow of the side that had secured a draw against Bayern Munich to advance to the semifinals.

Inter did look to be on course to at least see out a draw. A point would not have been the worst result considering the evident exhaustion in the Nerazzurri’s performance.

But a spectacular overhead kick by Bologna winger Riccardo Orsolini meant that Inter have to return to Milan empty-handed.

After the match, midfielder Nicolo Barella admitted that “a loss is always hard to stomach.”

“There are a lot of matches. But that’s not an excuse.”

Barella admitted that “it’s not normal for a team like ours to concede a goal like that in the last minute, with seven defenders against three in the area.”

“We have to do better,” the Italian international admitted. “Football doesn’t forgive.”

As far as Inter’s Serie A title defense, Barella said that “there’s always room for improvement.”

“We can’t ever feel like we’ve arrived.”

“It hurts because the match was even. A draw would have been more the fair result.”

And Barella commented that it’s “a shame, because we’re fighting on all fronts.”

“We’re giving our all. And setbacks like this hurt.”

But the 28-year-old also made clear that “nothing is over yet.”

“We’re still top of the table along with Napoli.”

“It will be a tough fight,” Barella anticipated. “But we want to fight on all fronts, and we certainly won’t stop here.”

And Nicolo Barella also admitted that Inter’s midfield is “definitely tired.”

“Zielinski’s absence from the rotation has definitely had an impact,” he added.

“However, the midfield isn’t just Barella, Calhanioglu, and Mkhitaryan,” said the former Cagliari midfielder. “Asllani and Frattesi have also made their contribution.”

“There’s tiredness. But we don’t hide and we don’t back down.”

Barella made perfectly clear that “we want to win.”

“That’s the mentality that we’ve created over the last few years. And one loss certainly isn’t going to change that.”
