kicker reports that Bayer Leverkusen are waiting on Florian Wirtz to give the green light on whether he signs a contract extension at the club.

Only the final details of the extension need to be finalised once Wirtz has made his decision. The extension will see Wirtz’s contract valid until 2028 and he will be one of the highest-paid players at the BayArena. There would also be a release clause included in the deal that would be worth around €125m and would be valid from next summer after the 2026 World Cup.

The decision of the 21-year-old will be made regardless of the future of head coach Xabi Alonso. However, all signs point towards the former midfielder staying at Leverkusen.

All the signs point towards Wirtz staying at Leverkusen. The Köln native’s side sees his personal development as not complete yet and at Leverkusen he would be able to develop his leadership qualities and mature as a player in a non-hostile environment.

On top of this, staying at Leverkusen for another year would then allow Wirtz the optimum preparation for the World Cup next summer as there would be minimal disruptive factors.

However, if Wirtz does decide to leave, he will not be short of suitors. It is well known that Bayern Munich are actively trying to sign the 21-year-old this summer, but they would need to sell players before they can even reach the €150m price tag that will likely be set. Manchester City, on the other hand, would not need to sell anyone and are also not deterred of the large fee that Leverkusen will demand.
