Bayern Munich made it three out of three for contract renewals of important players in the squad since the start of 2025. After the contract extensions of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies in February, Joshua Kimmich signed a new four-year deal on Thursday to bring an end to the speculation around his future.
The contract negotiations for Kimmich have been full of twists and turns. The Bavarian club had reportedly withdrawn their last offer a few days ago, as Kimmich was taking a lot of time to make a decision. Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain had shown concrete interest in signing the German midfielder.
Despite withdrawing the contract offer, Bayern hadn’t closed the door to a new deal. The talks between both parties picked up pace last week, and eventually, an agreement was reached that benefited everyone.
Kimmich wanted to make a decision based on sporting ambitions as he eyes more silverware during the peak years of his career. The German international believes Bayern provide the best environment for him to succeed and compete for the biggest honours in the game.
Since this is likely to be the last bumper long-term contract in Kimmich’s career, there was a lot of speculation around the numbers involved in the deal. However, Bayern did a fine job to convince him to continue on the same wages.
According to Bild, Kimmich will continue to earn a gross salary of €20 million/year at Bayern. The German midfielder was earning the same wage in his previous contract. Considering how crucial it is for Bayern to balance the books, getting Kimmich to extend his contract on the same wage is a brilliant move.
Vincent Kompany will be delighted to see Kimmich sign a new deal. The German midfielder has been the most consistent performer for Kompany this season. Kimmich has looked back to his best after enduring a wretched 2023/24 campaign. He has been one of the best central midfielders in Europe this season.
Bayern already see Kimmich as the next captain once Manuel Neuer hangs his boots. The German midfielder has the passion and quality to lead the team by example. Bayern players and chiefs have already backed him to become the permanent captain of the first team in the future.
With three big contracts out of the way, Leroy Sane remains the only senior player in the squad who could become a free agent in the summer. Sane remains keen on staying in Munich, but the club chiefs are reportedly not entirely convinced to offer him a new deal.
