On Wednesday evening, Bayern Munich faced Eredivisie side Feyenoord in Rotterdam, for match day seven of the UEFA Champions League.
For the task at hand, Vincent Kompany opted for a line up of; Neuer - Laimer, Upamecano, Kim, Davies - Kimmich, Goretzka - Olise, Musiala, Coman - Kane.
It was a very slow start to proceedings, in extremely foggy conditions — a blocked shot from Santiago Gimenez was the only shot of any note in the first 20 minutes. The game had a delayed start due to fog.
After 21 minutes, the hosts took the lead. All it took was one ball over the top, and Gimenez was through on goal. The Mexican forward kept his composure to fire the ball past Neuer.
Moments later, Bayern had a good chance to equalize. Upamecano whipped in a superb cross from the right half-space for Goretzka, but his header was not on target. A few minutes later, Upamecano missed a presentable opportunity of his own at the far post.
After 33 minutes, Coman went close from a tight angle. Soon after, Goretzka also had opportunities from inside the box, but neither could find the back of the net. Just before the halftime whistle, Bayern missed another big chance. After a cutback from the right, the ball fell to Kane inside the box, but his effort was saved by Justin Bijlow.
In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Davies had to be withdrawn through injury and was replaced by Guerreiro. Within two minutes, the Portuguese conceded a penalty with some absolutely brainless defending. Gimenez stepped up and made it 2-0 heading into the break.
At half time, Kompany introduced Sane for Laimer in an attacking change. Ten minutes into the second half, Kane went close, forcing a corner. From that corner, he had another effort, this time going over the crossbar.
Around the hour mark, Musiala’s header from a Kimmich cross was saved by Bijlow. From the subsequent corner, Goretzka had a header saved once again. Straight after, Pavlovic and Gnabry replaced Kim and Coman, as Bayern tried to salvage the game.
With 20 minutes to go, Sane hit the post. That was Bayern’s 27th attempt of the game. With seven minutes left, Muller replaced Musiala. Three minutes were remaining when Olise fired over from close range. Die Roten didn't have the rub of the green in this game and their finishing was also not up to mark.
Then, a couple of minutes later, Feyenoord made it 3-0. Absolutely unforgivable result. Bayern players are already running on empty, and now they are going to have to play two — completely avoidable — play off games. Where they could face the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City. There may be no knockouts after all.
Kompany needs a strong response from the team on Saturday against Freiburg even though they play in the Bundesliga 72 hours after playing against Feyenoord in the Champions League.
